Bio
Hailing from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dr. D. Omar Watson has carved an impressive path in the world of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. While his upbringing bore the complexities of blended family dynamics following his parents’ divorce, the resilience and unity from these early challenges became foundational pillars in his journey. Today, Dr. Watson proudly acknowledges a rich family tapestry with five brothers, two sisters, and a testament of love and guidance from his mother, father, and step-mother. Despite the tension of a non-traditional family, he is thankful that strong Christian principles were instilled from his parents and the persistent presence of his father, an ordained minister.
His academic journey was headlined by receiving the prestigious Medallion Academic Scholarship at Western Michigan University, leading to a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences. Next, he entered professional studies at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Where he graduated in the top half of his class. Furthermore, Dr. Watson’s outstanding contributions were recognized when he became the first student to receive the Ida Gray Award for championing multicultural values at the dental school. Post dental degree, he embarked on a rigorous residency in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the Detroit Receiving Hospital, while as obtaining a Medical Doctorate from Wayne State University School of Medicine.
In 2008, the magnetic pull of Richmond’s warmth and hospitality led Dr. Watson to Virginia Oral & Facial Surgery. Now a recognized face at Virginia Oral & Facial Surgery, his 20+ years of hands-on experience allows him to seamlessly connect with patients of all ages. Dr. Watson’s expertise spans across various surgical domains, including dentoalveolar surgery, dental implant surgery, orthognathic surgery, trauma, oral medicine, anesthesia, and pathology. The accolades on his wall boast of multiple “Top Doctor” and “Best Bedside Manner” awards – commendations for his exceptional patient care.
Beyond the surgical mask and gloves, Dr. Watson is a man deeply rooted in community service. His tenure as Vice-President of the Virginia Dental Association Foundation (VDAF) between 2021-2023 saw active participation in their Mission of Mercy projects. He is a leader within the local dental society and other professional groups. Most recently, his leadership earned the Presidents Award (2021) from Old Dominion Dental Society and the Shining Star Humanitarian Award (2018) from his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. – Beta Gamma Lambda Chapter.
Outside his surgical endeavors, Dr. Watson relishes quality moments with his wife and their two children, who are gracefully stepping into their young adulthood. He has a penchant for good music, an eager traveler, a sports enthusiast, and often finds solace in exercise and participating in church activities and ministries. He also thoroughly enjoys mentoring the next generation of health professionals with “real talk”. Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Watson embodies gratitude for both the challenges and successes life has presented. All things work for the good of shaping him into a dedicated surgeon, mentor, and the family man he is today.
